Pohutukawa was native to New Zealand’s North Island. It naturally grows along the coastal and beach areas. From December to January it blooms with deep red flowers which earned it the name Christmas Tree.
The nectar of this tree smells like caramel and it has a full bodied flavor. It’s gentle and elegant taste is well suited to tea, pancakes, toast and ice cream.
Pohutukawa honey is remembered as the honey which was presented to Queen Elizabeth in England. The name Pohutakawa means “showered with mist” which describes its flowers aptly.
